Premium Nylon Insert Lock Nuts (Nyloc): The Industry Standard for Vibration Resistance

At Handan Bolt, we manufacture high-performance Nylon Insert Lock Nuts, globally recognized as Nyloc Nuts. Produced in our automated facility in Yongnian, China, these fasteners are the backbone of secure assembly in the automotive, machinery, and electronics industries. By embedding a tough polymer ring into the nut, we provide a locking solution that is simple, effective, and reusable. We supply millions of DIN 985 and SAE J995 nuts annually to OEMs and hardware distributors.

What is a Nylon Insert Lock Nut?

A Nyloc Nut (Read more on Wikipedia) is a prevailing torque locknut. It features a captive undersized ring of nylon (polyamide) located at the top of the nut.

How it works: When the bolt threads reach the nylon ring, the threads of the bolt impress themselves into the nylon (without cutting it). The elastic compression of the nylon creates a tremendous amount of friction, gripping the bolt tightly. This friction prevents the nut from backing off due to vibration or thermal expansion.

Standards We Manufacture: DIN 985 vs. DIN 982

Understanding the difference between the standards listed in your specifications is crucial for choosing the right part:

1. DIN 985 / ISO 7040 (Standard/Thin Type)

This is the most common version used worldwide.

  • Profile: Lower height (thinner) compared to DIN 982.
  • Application: General purpose locking where space is slightly restricted. Perfect for securing light brackets, furniture, and non-critical machinery parts.

2. DIN 982 / ISO 7041 (High/Thick Type)

Also known as the “Heavy Series” or High Type.

  • Profile: Taller nut height with more thread engagement.
  • Application: Heavy-duty applications requiring higher proof loads. Often used in heavy trucks, earthmoving equipment, and structural connections.

3. ASME B18.16.6 / SAE J995 (US Standard)

For the North American market, we produce Inch-series Nyloc nuts (UNC/UNF) in Grade 2, Grade 5, and Grade 8 strengths.

Material Grades and Strength Classes

Since lock nuts are safety-critical, we strictly adhere to proof load requirements:

  • Class 8 (Metric): Made from medium carbon steel (like 35K or 45#). Designed to pair with Grade 8.8 bolts. This is the industry standard for automotive assembly.
  • Class 10 (Metric): Heat-treated alloy steel. Designed to pair with high-tensile Grade 10.9 bolts for high-stress joints.
  • Grade 5 & Grade 8 (Imperial): High-strength options for the US market, identifiable by specific markings (though Nyloc nuts often lack head markings due to the nylon ring).

Surface Finishes: Durability & Friction Control

The finish on a lock nut does more than just prevent rust; it affects the torque coefficient.

  • Zinc Plated (Blue/White): The standard finish. We carefully control the plating thickness to ensure it doesn’t interfere with the thread fit.
  • Yellow Zinc (Zinc Dichromate): Often requested for Grade 8 or Class 10 nuts to differentiate them from lower grades.
  • Waxing: For larger sizes, we apply a specific wax coating to ensure the nut runs down smoothly without “galling” (seizing up) before it locks.

Common Applications

Nyloc nuts are ubiquitous because they solve the universal problem of loosening bolts:

  • Automotive: Securing bumpers, dashboards, and suspension links.
  • White Goods: Washing machines and dryers (where vibration is constant).
  • Electronics: Mounting circuit boards and chassis components.
  • Bicycles & Motorcycles: Axle nuts and frame pivots.

Why Source from Handan Bolt?

Quality Nylon: We use imported, high-grade Nylon 66 material that resists oil, gasoline, and extreme temperatures (up to 120°C).
Torque Testing: Every production lot undergoes “Prevailing Torque” testing to ensure the locking force is within the ISO/IFI specified range—not too loose, not too tight.
Packaging: From small polybags for DIY stores to bulk 25kg cartons for industrial assembly lines.
