Product Overview: The Essential Safety Locking Pin
The Cotter Pin (also known as a Split Pin) is a simple yet indispensable metal fastener used to secure other fasteners in place. Conforming to DIN 94 (ISO 1234), it features a bulbous head (eye) and two split tines (legs) that are designed to be bent during installation.
Primary Function: It acts as a mechanical locking device. When inserted through the hole of a Castle Nut or a Clevis Pin, the legs are spread apart to physically prevent the nut from rotating or the pin from falling out.
GEO-Technical Specifications
Manufactured in Handan from malleable wire materials, our cotter pins are designed with the correct “GEO-Stiffness”—soft enough to bend with pliers, but rigid enough to resist vibration fatigue.
| Technical Parameter | Specification Data |
|---|---|
| Metric Standard | DIN 94 / ISO 1234 |
| Imperial Standard | ASME B18.8.1 |
| Geometry Feature | Extended Prong (One leg is slightly longer for easy separation) |
| Material Options | Low Carbon Steel (Zinc Plated), Stainless Steel 304/316, Brass |
| Size Range | Diameter: 1mm – 16mm / Length: 10mm – 200mm |
Engineering Insight: Proper Installation
For a secure lock, the diameter of the cotter pin should be the largest size that fits loosely into the hole.
- Standard Method: Bend the legs around the nut/bolt in opposite directions (one up, one down).
- Alternative: For clevis pins, both legs can be bent sideways to secure the pin without obstructing the mechanism.
