Industrial Grade All Metal Lock Nuts (DIN 980 / IFI 100): The Heat-Resistant Locking Solution

At Handan Bolt, we engineer fasteners for the most extreme environments. Our All Metal Lock Nuts (technically known as Prevailing Torque Nuts) are designed for applications where standard nylon lock nuts would fail. Manufactured in our heat-treatment facility in Yongnian, China, these nuts rely on a distorted thread mechanism to create a powerful locking force. We are a trusted supplier of DIN 980 and IFI 100 standard nuts to the automotive engine, exhaust system, and heavy mining industries.

What is an All Metal Lock Nut?

As the name implies, this Locknut (Read more on Wikipedia) is made entirely of steel, with no plastic or nylon inserts.

The Locking Mechanism: The top threads of the nut are deliberately deformed (either elliptical deformation or 3-point crimping) during manufacturing. When a bolt is screwed into these distorted threads, it forces the nut to expand slightly back to a round shape. This elastic reaction creates high friction (prevailing torque) between the mating threads, effectively locking the assembly.

Why Choose All-Metal Over Nylon Insert?

While Nyloc nuts are great for general use, All Metal Lock Nuts are superior in specific scenarios:

  • High Heat Resistance: Nylon melts at around 120°C. Our All Metal nuts function perfectly in temperatures exceeding 500°C, making them the only choice for engine manifolds, turbochargers, and industrial ovens.
  • Chemical Resistance: They are impervious to aggressive chemicals, oils, and solvents that might degrade a nylon ring.
  • Durability: The robust steel construction withstands higher shock loads and severe vibration.

Standards We Manufacture: DIN vs. IFI

As indicated in your product specifications, we cover both Metric and Imperial standards:

1. DIN 980 / ISO 7042 (Metric Standard)

This is the standard European specification for all-metal prevailing torque nuts.

  • Type V (Single Piece): Our most popular type. It is a solid metal nut with a deformed top.
  • Type M (Two Piece): Uses a separate spring steel element (available upon request).

2. IFI 100/107 (US Standard – “Stover” Style)

For the North American market, we produce Grade C and Grade G nuts that meet IFI 100 standards. These are often referred to as “Stover” nuts or “Cone Lock” nuts in the trade. They feature a conical top with automated distortion for consistent torque.

High-Tensile Material Grades

Since these nuts operate under high stress, material hardness is critical. We supply:

  • Metric Class 8 & 10: Made from heat-treated carbon steel (like 35K or 45#). Grade 10 is essential for pairing with high-strength Grade 10.9 bolts in automotive suspensions.
  • Imperial Grade C: The highest strength US grade for lock nuts, heat-treated to withstand extreme proof loads.
  • Stainless Steel (A2/A4): For marine environments. *Note: We apply a special wax coating to stainless lock nuts to prevent galling (cold welding) during installation.*

Surface Finishes and Lubrication

The finish is not just for looks; it controls the friction coefficient:

  • Zinc Plated (Clear/Yellow): Provides standard corrosion protection.
  • Black Phosphate / Oil: A common finish for Grade 10 and Grade C nuts. It retains lubrication well, which is vital for preventing thread galling during the high-friction installation process.
  • Geomet / Dacromet: For high-performance automotive applications requiring 1000+ hours of salt spray resistance.

Common Applications

These nuts are the workhorses of heavy industry:

  • Automotive Exhausts: Securing headers and catalytic converters where heat is intense.
  • Heavy Machinery: Rock crushers and vibrating screens in mines.
  • Railways: Track fasteners and bogie assemblies.
  • Farm Equipment: Plows and harvesters subject to constant shock.

Why Source from Handan Bolt?

Consistent Torque: We use automated tapping and locking machines to ensure the “locking torque” stays within the specific narrow range defined by DIN 980—ensuring it’s not too hard to install, but won’t fall off.
Heat Treatment Control: Our in-house tempering ensures the nut is hard enough to spring back, but not brittle enough to crack.
Full Range: From M6 up to M36 sizes available in bulk.
